NYTimes is reporting that flutist Claire Chase has become the first flutist to win the Avery Fisher Prize. Previous winners of this award include Yo-Yo Ma, and Joshua Bell. Never heard of her, but she plays great! Congrats.

Sad news. Jazz flutist Dave Valentin has died.

Much too young. 64 is still prime playing age.
